The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has announced that it has reached an advanced stage in preparations for the commencement of Phase I of its Avian Influenza Control Programme.

Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that affects poultry and can trigger sudden outbreaks with high mortality rates. Such outbreaks often result in significant economic losses for farmers and pose serious disruptions to the livestock sector.

The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isah, said the initiative is part of the state government’s proactive measures to prevent and effectively manage potential outbreaks across Kano and neighbouring states.

According to the Commissioner, the control programme will focus on prevention, early detection, improved biosecurity practices, and rapid response to suspected cases.

“The programme will help prevent outbreaks, protect poultry farmers, safeguard public health, and enhance food security in Kano State and beyond,” he stated.

Dr Isah reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing robust disease prevention and control strategies aimed at ensuring sustainable livestock development and strengthening the poultry industry.

He noted that the establishment of the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development underscores the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to improving livestock management, reinforcing disease control systems, and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.

The Commissioner also commended the Governor for his leadership and continued support in advancing livestock development and protecting the state’s agricultural economy.

The programme is expected to play a vital role in reducing the risk of avian influenza outbreaks and ensuring long-term stability in poultry production across Kano State.
