The Kogi State Police Command has officially inaugurated the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), a specialised tactical outfit established to tackle kidnapping, armed banditry, highway attacks and other violent crimes across the state.

The inauguration ceremony, which took place on Thursday, was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs, religious leaders, civil society groups and other stakeholders, marking a significant step in strengthening the state’s security architecture.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, said the establishment of the VCRU was in line with the operational directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, whose reform-driven policing strategy emphasises proactive policing, intelligence-led operations and rapid response to security threats.

According to the police chief, the changing security landscape requires a specialised and coordinated approach to addressing violent crimes, particularly kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry.

He commended the Kogi State Government for its support in making the project a reality, noting that the facility housing the unit was constructed, furnished, renovated and upgraded by the state government to meet the operational needs of the tactical squad.

“The establishment of this unit reflects the unwavering commitment of the Kogi State Government to supporting security agencies and ensuring the safety of residents,” he said.

The VCRU is expected to carry out intelligence-led operations, strengthen surveillance, support security interventions in high-risk areas and collaborate closely with other security agencies to improve public safety.

The police commissioner disclosed that officers selected for the unit underwent rigorous screening and professional assessment to ensure they met high standards of discipline, integrity, operational competence and physical fitness.

Members of the unit will operate in designated black tactical uniforms, including black combat attire, berets, boots and approved insignia for easy identification and operational effectiveness.

Charging the officers to justify the confidence reposed in them, he urged them to carry out their duties with professionalism, discipline, courage and respect for human rights, while adhering strictly to established rules of engagement.

He further stressed the importance of collaboration among security agencies, community leaders, traditional institutions, youth groups, religious bodies and the general public in sustaining peace and security across the state.

Assuring residents of the unit’s commitment to lawful and professional conduct, the police commissioner said the VCRU would operate within the ambit of the law and remain dedicated to protecting lives and property throughout Kogi State.

The launch of the unit is expected to bolster ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities and enhance public confidence in law enforcement across the state.
