For many Nigerian tech professionals, spending eight to twelve hours daily in front of a screen has become normal. Software developers, graphic designers, digital marketers, content creators and remote workers often move from one screen to another with little or no break.

While technology has made work easier, it has also created a growing health challenge known as digital eye strain or screen fatigue. If left unmanaged, screen fatigue can affect productivity, concentration and overall well-being.

In this article, Tribune Online highlights practical ways Nigerian tech professionals can protect their eyes while working.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule

One of the simplest ways to reduce eye strain is by following the 20-20-20 rule. The rule recommends that every 20 minutes, you should look away from your screen at an object about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

This short break allows the eye muscles to relax and reduces the stress caused by continuous focusing on a digital screen.

Blink more often to prevent dry eyes

Many people blink less frequently when using computers, smartphones and tablets. According to eye health experts, staring at digital screens can significantly reduce your blink rate, causing the eyes to dry out faster.

Dry eyes may lead to irritation, redness, burning sensations and blurred vision.

Tech professionals should consciously blink more often, especially during long coding sessions, online meetings or content creation work.

Position your screen correctly

The position of your screen plays a major role in eye comfort. It’s recommended to position your screen about an arm’s length away from your eyes. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level. This position reduces strain on both the eyes and neck muscles, making it easier to work comfortably for longer periods.

Improve your workspace lighting

Many remote workers prefer working in dark rooms with only the screen providing light. While this may seem comfortable, it can actually increase eye strain. A well-lit workspace helps to balance the contrast between the screen and the surrounding environment. Natural daylight or adequate room lighting can make reading text on screens less stressful for the eyes.

Adjust screen brightness and text size

A screen that is too bright or too dim can force the eyes to work harder. The brightness of your screen should closely match the lighting in your room. Increasing text size can also reduce strain by making content easier to read without squinting. Many devices now include eye comfort settings that reduce glare and improve readability during extended use.

Take regular breaks from screens

Working continuously for hours without a break increases the likelihood of eye strain and fatigue. Simple activities such as standing up, stretching, walking around the room or stepping outside for a few minutes can help to reduce stress on the eyes and improve overall comfort.
