Asthma is a common respiratory condition that affects millions of people across the world, including Nigerians.
Despite its prevalence, there is still a lack of understanding about the condition. Many people do not recognise its symptoms or know how to respond when someone is struggling to breathe or when an asthmatic patient experiences an attack.
Asthma is usually triggered by dust mites, strong fragrances, smoke and so on.
This lack of awareness can be dangerous. During an asthma attack, immediate action can make a difference between life and death.
Unfortunately, some schools, workplaces, and public places are not adequately equipped to handle such emergencies. In many cases, people panic or offer inappropriate assistance because they have never been educated about asthma management.
There is an urgent need for public awareness about asthma triggers, symptoms, prevention, and emergency response procedures. Schools should include basic asthma education in their health programmes, while workplaces and public institutions should train staff on how to assist individuals experiencing asthma attacks.
Asthmatics should also be encouraged to carry their inhalers and inform trusted people around them about their condition.
Furthermore, healthcare organisations and government agencies should collaborate to make asthma medications more accessible and affordable. No one should lose their life because of a lack of awareness or preparedness.
By promoting asthma awareness and improving emergency preparedness, we can create safer communities and help individuals living with asthma live healthier and be more productive, because awareness is the bridge between ignorance and action.
