The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Lagos State University (LASU) branch, has issued a 14-day strike ultimatum to the university management and the Lagos State Government to address key welfare demands or face industrial action.
The decision was reached at an emergency congress held on campus between 8 and 13 July 2026.
In a communiqué signed by the branch Chairman, Demu Bankole, and Acting Secretary, Olumayowa Okunbo, the union warned that it would embark on all lawful industrial actions if its demands were not satisfactorily met within the two-week timeframe.
The union highlighted seven major grievances fuelling the impending crisis. These include the non-payment of the ₦50,000 palliative reportedly announced by the state government to cushion current economic hardship, 11 months’ salary arrears, the proposed review of conditions of service without the union’s input, and the delayed implementation of the 35 per cent salary increment contained in the newly signed 2026 Federal Government/SSANU-NASU agreement.
The union also demanded the immediate release of the official review report on the contentious 2024/2025 promotion exercise, the reversal of the appointment of academic staff as directors in two non-teaching directorates, and the implementation of the 20 per cent wage increase promised by the Lagos State Governor during the 2023 election campaign.
The union leadership emphasised that the 14-day countdown began with the release of its official statement.
“Failure to comply within this stipulated timeframe will leave the Congress with no option but to reconvene and deploy all necessary, lawful and collective industrial actions,” the communiqué stated.
As of press time, neither the LASU management nor the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education had issued an official response to the union’s ultimatum.
