Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to restore petroleum subsidy if elected president in the 2027 election, saying his administration would first eliminate corruption in the system.

Obi made the promise on Monday at a town hall meeting held in Sokoto for the Obi/Kwankwaso presidential ticket, where he identified corruption as one of the major challenges undermining Nigeria’s development.

“People are talking about subsidy but what is all about it is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also promised that an NDC government would take action against corruption across sectors, while directing national resources towards the economy, security and education.

“The problem of Nigeria is corruption, as such, if elected, we will stop all forms of corruption in every sector of the country,” he added.

Obi said education would receive particular attention under his administration, alongside efforts to strengthen national unity and security.

“Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” he said.

He further pledged to link all state capitals across the country by rail, saying improved rail connectivity would support economic activities and contribute to national development.

At the Sokoto meeting, Obi also called on Nigerians to support NDC candidates across all levels in the 2027 elections, framing the task of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges as a collective responsibility.

The NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, said the delegation visited Sokoto to interact with residents and seek their support ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, said the team had also visited the Sultan of Sokoto, who he said prayed for the success of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket and expressed his goodwill towards the delegation.

He also raised concerns over insecurity in parts of the country, particularly banditry and kidnapping across the North-West.

“We are, therefore, committed to mitigating all these challenges and make Nigeria better,” Kwankwaso said.
