Though he was denied the ticket to return to the Senate for the fifth session in a row, former Governor of Gombe, Sen Muhammad Danjuma Goje, on Saturday, declared that he remains a full-fledged and registered member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for now. The former Governor made the assertion when members of the APC who are his supporters, as well as some others who belong to the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), in the State paid him a solidarity visit at his Gombe residence. The solidarity visit was part of the move to lobby and mount pressure on him to defect to any of the parties, after it became clear that the APC is not offering him its ticket back to the Senate in the 2027 general elections. ALSO READ: ADC’s Dan’Iya backs Atiku’s fuel subsidy proposal Recall that the political disagreement between the former Governor and the incumbent Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who served as Commissioner of Finance and Economic Development during the 8 years of the Danjuma Goje-led administration, cost him the ticket of the APC. While addressing the mammoth crowd of supporters at his Gombe residence, Danjuma Goje vehemently denied insinuations that he is defecting to any political party, affirming that he remained a member of the APC. According to him, “I have not defected to any political party. I am still a member of the APC. But I will soon make known my next political move. Therefore, I am urging you to cooperate with our leaders and remain loyal to the party.” He urged his supporters to return to their respective bases and await further communication from him, which will shape the political scene of the State ahead of the 2027 general elections. Danjuma Goje reflected on his about 45 years in the political scene of the country, saying he had contested elections eight times from the Second Republic to date and emerged victorious in all the previous contests without losing. “During these four decades, I was elected a member of a State House of Assembly, a two-term governor. And won election for the senate seat four times, as well as serving as a minister between 1999 and 2001,” he added. According to him, he succumbed to pressure from supporters and contested in the 2023 general elections, after he had initially announced his retirement from politics in 2019 and made known his intention not to contest in the 2023 elections. He, however, assured his supporters that his empowerment programmes would continue irrespective of his political status, stressing, “I want to assure you that my empowerment programmes whether I am in the senate or not.” All the speakers at the occasion commended Danjuma Goje for his resilience in politics and his ability to always put smiles on the faces of the people of the State irrespective of political affiliation.
