The Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs has reunited a child who had been missing for ten years with his biological parents, bringing an emotional end to a decade-long separation.

The Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, oversaw the handover ceremony held at the Ministry’s premises in Kano on Wednesday.

The child, identified as Musa, was separated from his parents a decade ago and had been residing in Dawanau, under Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area. He hails from Gwagwalada.

According to the Ministry, the reunion followed a thorough and carefully coordinated process involving traditional authorities, officials of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, and the family that had been caring for the child during his years of separation.

The Ministry stated that all necessary investigations and verification procedures were conducted to confirm the child’s identity and ensure that due process was strictly followed before the reunion.

The statement was signed by Bintu Nuhu Yakasai, Director of Public Enlightenment, Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, and a copy was made available to the press in Kano.

Officials of the Ministry, alongside representatives of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, accompanied the child back to his hometown, where he was formally received by his biological father, mother and other close relatives.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner emphasised the importance of parental responsibility and vigilance, urging parents — particularly mothers and caregivers — to remain watchful and prioritise the safety and wellbeing of their children.

She warned against negligence and reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of children across Kano State.

Hajiya Sani further disclosed that the Ministry would conduct periodic follow-up visits to monitor the child’s wellbeing and ensure his proper adjustment in a safe and supportive environment, noting that the follow-up forms part of standard child protection procedures aimed at sustainable reintegration.

In recognition of her role in caring for the child during the period of separation, the woman who had been raising him was empowered by the Ministry as a gesture of appreciation for her cooperation and support throughout the investigation and reunification process.

Also speaking at the event, the District Head of Gwagwalada, Musa Tanko Awaje, expressed appreciation to the Ministry and other relevant authorities for their diligence and transparency in handling the case. He commended the investigative process that led to the successful reunion.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable children, strengthening collaboration with traditional institutions and local government authorities, and promoting community awareness of child safety and parental responsibility.
