Kano State government has inaugurated a committee to identify illegal structures and review building approvals across the Kano metropolis as part of renewed efforts to restore order in urban development and enforce compliance with physical planning laws.
The move followed growing concerns by the government over the indiscriminate erection of buildings without proper approvals, a development officials say poses serious threats to public safety, environmental sustainability and orderly urban growth.
The government noted that despite regulations guiding physical development in the state, some developers continue to construct projects without securing approvals from relevant authorities, thereby creating challenges for residents and undermining the state’s urban planning objectives.
To address the situation, the government constituted the committee on identification of illegal structures, chaired by the Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani.
Other members of the committee include retired permanent secretary and former Head of Department of Architecture at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Dayyabu Zubairu Gani; Ahmad Sunusi of the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS); Umar Musa Umar of North-West University, Kano; retired surveyor general, Abubakar Usman; Dr. Zainab Ibrahim Jibril; Sunusi Abdullahi K’Naisa; Muzammil Ibrahim Yakasai of Freedom Radio; and Bello Zakari, Special Assistant on Revenue to Sani.
The committee is to identify illegal structures, particularly in Nasarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso and Fagge local government areas, while reviewing all building approvals granted within the last one year to determine those processed under both the immediate past and current management.
It is expected to recommend measures to halt illegal developments and provide sustainable solutions to strengthen compliance with urban planning regulations across the metropolis.
The committee is to submit its report within four weeks.
Speaking during the inauguration on behalf of the governor, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, described the assignment as crucial to Kano’s physical, economic and environmental development, urging members to discharge their responsibilities with diligence and integrity. Responding, committee chairman Sani assured the government that the team will work to justify the confidence reposed in them.
