The opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has uploaded the names and particulars of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, to the nomination portal of the country’s electoral body.
The National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, announced this in a post on his X handle on Tuesday night.
He said the development represented another important step in the party’s preparations for the 2027 general election and its commitment to offer Nigerians a credible alternative built on competence, unity, and national renewal.
“We are pleased to announce that we have successfully uploaded the names and particulars of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), and our Vice Presidential Candidate, Rotimi Amaechi (CON), to the nomination portal of the @INECNigeria.
“This marks another important step in our preparations for the 2027 general election and our commitment to offer Nigerians a credible alternative built on competence, unity, and national renewal,” the post @BolajiADC read.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in its revised timetable, had said political parties must submit candidate nominations from June 27 to July 11, 2026.
The commission gave political parties access codes to upload the names, personal particulars, and other required information relating to nominated candidates for the 2027 general elections at the weekend, after a two-day training programme for their officials on the use of the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal (ICNP).
On June 9, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, while delivering his opening remarks at the Second Quarterly Consultative Meeting with leaders of political parties held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, said the commission would issue official access codes to political parties for the Candidate Nomination Portal for the nomination of candidates for the 2027 general elections on Friday, June 26.
Amupitan said the access codes would enable designated national officers of political parties to upload the names, personal particulars, and other required information relating to nominated candidates.
He urged political parties to ensure that their ICT personnel and relevant officers were adequately prepared for the exercise, and stated that all submissions must be completed within the stipulated deadlines.
“The portal is fully automated and will close automatically at the expiration of the prescribed period,” the INEC chairman warned.
Although party primaries for the election of candidates were concluded on May 30, there was tension following the failure of some political parties to issue certificates of return to elected candidates.
The uncertainty was worsened by party leaders’ statements that results announced at collation centres may not stand, since party leadership retains final authority.
APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, said only parties would announce final results. Senate President Godswill Akpabio also told colleagues who lost primaries “it was not the end of the matter.”
Later, Akpabio met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and other House leaders also met the president. Both meetings are seen as moves to accommodate aspirants who lost out.
According to the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, presidential and National Assembly elections are now fixed for Saturday, January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, February 6, 2027.
