Two persons lost their lives in the early hours of Thursday, involving a white Mack truck and an orange Peugeot J5 bus, at Ogbere junction along Ogbere-J4 on Sagamu-Benin Expressway.
According to a statement issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps, Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Odunsi, the incident occurred at about 5:10 am, as a result of route and speed violations.
He said that two others escaped unhurt in the accident, explaining that the impact of the collision led to the Peugeot J5 bus catching fire, with its front section completely burnt.
Odunsi said, “The crash occurred at about 5:10 a.m. and involved two vehicles: a white Mack truck with registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus with an unknown registration number.
“A total of four adult male occupants were involved in the crash. Unfortunately, two persons lost their lives, while two others escaped unhurt. No injuries were recorded.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the probable causes of the crash were route violation (RTV) and speed violation (SPV). The impact of the collision led to the Peugeot J5 bus catching fire, with its front section completely burnt.
“FRSC rescue personnel arrived at the scene within two minutes of being notified and immediately commenced traffic management. The affected lane was diverted to the alternative carriageway to ease vehicular movement while efforts continued to remove the wreckage and restore free flow of traffic.”
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi warned drivers against speeding and route violations, especially during periods of poor visibility and on wet road surfaces.
He noted that such dangerous driving behaviours continue to be major causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.
