The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group (BAT-IG) has urged President Bola Tinubu to institutionalise a monthly policy focus and quarterly leadership empowerment summit for political appointees, governors and local government chairmen to strengthen policy coordination and improve governance across the country.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Comrade Bamidele Atoyebi, on Thursday, the group argued that the country’s major governance challenge was no longer the availability of resources but ensuring that governments at all levels pursued a common vision with clearly defined priorities.
Atoyebi said the Tinubu administration had implemented far-reaching economic reforms and increased statutory allocations to states and local governments, stressing that stronger coordination was needed to translate the resources into visible development.
According to him, “The greatest challenge facing the country is no longer the availability of resources but ensuring that every tier of government works with a shared vision and clearly defined priorities in governance and development.”
He noted that since assuming office, the President had expanded investment in critical national projects, among several reforms.
Atoyebi proposed that the Presidency should introduce a monthly policy focus assigning a specific national development priority to all tiers of government, with areas such as rural roads, primary healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment, market development and support for small businesses receiving concentrated attention.
He also called for the establishment of a quarterly leadership empowerment summit involving the President, governors, ministers, local government chairmen and other key political office holders to review progress, share best practices and strengthen policy implementation.
“The Presidency can bridge this gap by introducing a Monthly Policy Focus that assigns a single national development priority to all tiers of government, while quarterly leadership summits will reinforce a common national agenda and improve policy execution,” Atoyebi said.
Drawing from President Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State, he said similar periodic engagements with cabinet members and local government officials contributed to effective policy implementation and institutional reforms.
He maintained that institutionalising such meetings at the national level would improve accountability, reduce duplication of projects, strengthen policy alignment and ensure that increased public spending delivered tangible benefits to Nigerians.
The group expressed confidence that adopting the proposed monthly policy direction and quarterly leadership summit would deepen collaboration across the three tiers of government and accelerate the implementation of the
Renewed Hope Agenda.
