The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu, has warned that anyone involved in political violence in Osun State will face the full weight of the law, declaring that “nobody will commit a crime and go scot-free.”
Speaking in Osogbo on Friday, the police chief said he travelled from Abuja specifically to meet stakeholders ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
“You cannot kill anyone and think you can walk around freely. That is why I left Abuja to come here and talk with you today,” Disu told political leaders at separate meetings held at the Government House and Police Headquarters.
The IGP said the police have received several reports of violence linked to different political parties. He stressed that the election should not be treated as a war.
“We are preparing for an election, not a war. We will campaign and provide security for you during the election in this state,” he assured.
Disu disclosed that he was briefed by the Osun Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, about suspects allegedly being harboured, and said the matter was raised directly with Governor Ademola Adeleke.
“Fortunately, I mentioned this at the Governor’s office, and the Governor replied that even if his own child commits a crime, I should arrest him,” the IGP said, noting that senior officers witnessed the exchange.
The IGP further warned that the era of impunity was over.
“Those who are planning to kill, whether they are here or anywhere else, should know it is not going to be business as usual. Human life is sacred,” he said.
He directed the Commissioner of Police to pursue all persons linked to violent offences.
The IGP concluded by assuring all parties of a level playing field and adequate security during campaigns.
“We will provide a conducive environment for you to campaign when the time comes. Stakeholders should work with the police to ensure a peaceful election,” he concluded.
Governor Adeleke, while receiving the IGP, reiterated his stance on zero tolerance for crime.
“If you see any of my people committing a crime, arrest them. All these lies, look, even if it is my son committing a crime, arrest him,” the governor said.
He added that security reports indicated plans by some persons to cause panic through shootings, and welcomed the IGP’s firm position against violence.
