The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lacks the capacity to effectively lead the country, accusing him of failing to demonstrate leadership on critical national security issues.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, excerpts of which were posted on X on Wednesday.
Speaking on security and governance, Obi argued that the President should communicate directly with Nigerians rather than relying on aides.
“President Tinubu needs to speak directly to Nigerians. It was not Bayo Onanuga who promised us, ‘If I don’t give you power, don’t vote for me,’” he said.
The former governor of Anambra also compared Tinubu’s response to security challenges with his criticism of former President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2014 abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls.
“During the Chibok girls’ abduction, it took less than two weeks for Tinubu to publicly call on President Jonathan to resign. Yet today, it has been over seven weeks since the kidnapping in Oyo State, and President Tinubu has not called Governor Makinde even once,” Obi said.
Responding to claims by the ruling party that insecurity is a global challenge and that the opposition is fueling insecurity, Obi dismissed the argument.
“That is nonsensical. President Tinubu does not have the capacity to be in charge. I was shocked when Governor Makinde told me that the President has not called him since those children were kidnapped,” he said.
Obi’s comments come amid renewed political debates over the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
