Nigeria’s drive to expand medical and healthcare education has received a boost as the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved five new undergraduate health science programmes for Wellspring University, Benin, with effect from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approval, announced by the vice chancellor, Professor Isaac Rotimi Ajayi, during a press conference at the university’s Senate Chamber, enables the institution to commence the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), B.Sc. Human Anatomy, B.Sc. Human Physiology, Bachelor of Health Information Management (BHIM) and Bachelor of Community Health Science (B.CHS.) programmes.

Ajayi described the approval as a landmark achievement that will strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare manpower development, saying the university had now joined the ranks of institutions authorised to train medical doctors and other critical health professionals required to support the nation’s health sector.

He said the approval followed a rigorous resource assessment and verification exercise conducted by a panel of experts from the NUC in April 2026, which confirmed that the university possesses the academic resources, infrastructure, governance system, teaching facilities and qualified personnel required to run the programmes.

He said the development reflected the institution’s sustained investment in quality education, research, staff development, ICT-driven teaching and modern learning facilities, noting that the university had continued to record successful accreditation outcomes across its academic programmes.

The vice chancellor reiterated that the institution remains committed to producing graduates who are intellectually sound, morally upright and globally competitive through a curriculum that promotes academic excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship, character development and service to humanity.

Ajayi expressed appreciation to the NUC, the university’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Governing Council, Senate, management, staff, students and other stakeholders for their support.
