We’re sure of meeting target —LP
While political parties are sorting out internal issues over the publication of names of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 polls with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), attention has also shifted to the deadline for the submission of the lists for governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates.
Recall that INEC set the deadline for the submission of the names of candidates for August 8, which is days away.
Findings on Wednesday indicated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had uploaded the names of governorship and House of Assembly candidates in the majority of states.
At least 31 states will participate in the governorship polls in 2027 while candidates are also being fielded for all 36 state Houses of Assembly.
About 31 governorship candidates and 31 running mates, totaling 62 names, are being uploaded for each participating political party.
Similarly, 990 names are expected to be fielded by participating political parties for the seats in the 36 State Houses of Assembly across the country.
Concerns had been raised over the capacity of the parties to meet up with the August 8 deadline, considering that they are dealing with a higher number of candidates this time round, compared to the uploading of the names of presidential and National Assembly candidates earlier concluded on July 14.
However, the PDP confirmed on Wednesday that it had achieved 90 percent of the upload so far.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party was also confident that all the names would be uploaded within the timeframe set by INEC.
Speaking in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, the National Publicity Secretary, Honourable Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, disclosed that as of Tuesday, August 4, the party had uploaded “90 percent” of the names of the candidates and their particulars.
“We have uploaded up to 90 percent as of yesterday and the exercise is going on smoothly,” he stated.
Findings showed that the Labour Party (LP) certified 1,211 candidates across all elective tiers for 2027.
The 1,211 slots cover 28 governorship positions, 99 senatorial seats, 307 House of Representatives seats and 776 State Houses of Assembly candidates (out of 993 seats nationwide).
As of Wednesday, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the LP chaired by Senator Nenadi Usman, said the party recorded no serious glitches “or issues” with uploading the names of the candidates for the governorship and state Houses Assembly polls.
According to the National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ken Asogwa, the party has done “over 85 percent” of uploading.
“Labour Party is doing well. We will meet the target. So far, it has been smooth and we are ready to meet the deadline. It is August 8, we know.
