Borno State Police Command has raised concerns over the rising cases of phone theft and handset snatching in Maiduguri metropolis.
The command said it had recovered more than 52 stolen mobile phones in the past month as part of efforts to tackle the trend.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, disclosed this during a strategic meeting with members of the Maiduguri GSM Market Committee.
According to him, the meeting was necessitated by emerging security concerns and reports of increasing cases of phone theft and handset snatching in the metropolis.
Abdulmajid urged GSM dealers and other stakeholders in the telecommunications business to remain vigilant and ensure that their businesses were not used as channels for the sale or disposal of stolen mobile phones.
He also called on members of the GSM Village Committee to support the Police by providing timely and useful information that could assist in identifying individuals involved in phone theft and the circulation of stolen handsets.
Responding, the Chairman of the Maiduguri GSM Market Association, Aliko Dass, assured the command of the association’s commitment to supporting the Police through timely information and intelligence sharing.
Dass also pledged the association’s cooperation in identifying and preventing the circulation of stolen mobile phones.
The Police Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities through 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
