Social commentator and businessman, Isaac Fayose, has disagreed with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the political strength of the opposition in Abuja ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Fayose, who spoke on News Central TV on Tuesday, claimed that the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, would win the FCT in the 2027 election.
His comments came shortly after Wike said the opposition would find it difficult to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the nation’s capital.
Wike had previously said that the 2027 presidential election would be easier for Tinubu, citing what he described as the weakened state of the opposition. He also recently maintained that his political contest in Rivers State would be his easiest yet.
Fayose, however, challenged the minister’s assessment of the political mood in Abuja, declaring: “Abuja is NDC, Abuja is Peter Obi.”
He alleged that the only option left for the ruling party would be to “write results”, while insisting that the NDC had strategies in place to prevent any attempt to manipulate the election.
“People are ready to vote. All we are scared of now is what angle are they going to suppress us from this time? This is the only area we are trying to fine-tune.
“Go to the street and try to talk to one or two people. Ask them, ‘Who are you going to vote for?’
“Abroad, before the proper election, they seek people’s opinions on who they want to vote for through mock elections. We don’t do that in Nigeria, but we need to start doing it,” he said.
Obi won the FCT in the 2023 presidential election, defeating Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, according to the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Fayose’s claim about the 2027 outcome remains a political assertion ahead of the election, rather than an established result.
