The President of African Private Universities and Founder of Maryam Abacha American University Nigeria (MAAUN), Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has been invited to deliver the Convocation Lecture at the 13th Graduation Ceremony of the International Open University (IOU) in Banjul, The Gambia.
Gwarzo will also serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony, scheduled for Friday, January 22, 2027, at 5:30 p.m. at the OIC Conference Centre, Banjul.
The invitation was contained in a letter signed by the Vice-Chancellor/President of the International Open University, Professor Makie Taal.
According to the university, Gwarzo was invited in recognition of his longstanding contributions to the development of higher education and his experience in establishing and leading academic institutions.
The Convocation Lecture is an important component of the university’s graduation programme and is designed to expose graduating students to the experiences and perspectives of accomplished leaders as they prepare for professional responsibilities and life beyond the university.
In the letter, Professor Taal said the university would be honoured to have Gwarzo share his reflections and insights with the graduating students and the wider university community.
“Given your longstanding involvement in the development of higher education and your experience in building and leading academic institutions, we would be honoured to have you share your reflections and insights with our graduates and the University community,” the letter stated.
The university expressed confidence that Gwarzo’s address would provide encouragement and practical perspectives to the graduates as they prepare to contribute to their professions and communities.
It added that his participation would “add considerable value to the academic and celebratory occasion.”
The invitation also highlights Gwarzo’s engagement in higher education development and academic leadership across Africa, particularly his involvement in the advancement of private university education on the continent.
The 13th Graduation Ceremony is expected to feature the conferment of degrees, the presentation of academic honours and awards, and a celebration of the achievements of graduating students.
University officials, academics, dignitaries, graduates, families and members of the wider academic community are expected to attend the ceremony in Banjul.
