The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has continued the Commission’s readiness assessment ahead of the 2027 general election with a visit to Enugu State.

Amupitan, alongside National Commissioners, Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from the South-East and senior officials of the Commission, engaged staff and assessed level of preparedness for the polls.

Speaking during the engagement, Prof. Amupitan stressed strict neutrality, professionalism and adherence to the Electoral Act and the Commission’s code of conduct.

He warned staff against actions capable of undermining public confidence.

He said while the Commission recorded progress in recent off-cycle elections, the scale of the 2027 general election requires more rigorous planning, stronger coordination and strict adherence to procedures.

According to him, INEC has completed nine of the 14 major statutory milestones in its revised timetable and schedule of activities, adding that the Commission must sustain pace as election day approaches.

He urged staff to resist political pressure, financial inducements and intimidation, and ensure every decision is guided by law.

The INEC chairman said the Commission would continue working with security agencies to protect personnel, technological assets, materials and voters, while ensuring polling units remain accessible despite local security challenges.

Earlier, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu, said the assessment provided opportunity to examine operational realities, identify gaps, share experiences and develop practical solutions.

He urged participants to use the exercise for honest assessment and constructive problem-solving, assuring leadership of Enugu’s commitment to work with headquarters, other states, security agencies and stakeholders.

Also speaking, Director of Planning and Monitoring, Helen Ajayi, said the exercise was to assess state preparedness and identify operational challenges before elections, and to reinforce compliance with Code of Conduct.

Directors and representatives from Voter Education and Publicity, Voter Registry, ICT, Human Resources, and Election and Operations departments also presented their preparations for the 2027 polls.
